Another BIG update! Wednesday, Apr 8 2009

There have been some changes with Keeva’s litter.

As was stated in the last update, Bacchus (now known as Gus) had found a wonderful home and a deposit had been placed on Isis. Well, our sweet little Isis was recently picked up by her new mommy and we are thrilled for her new home. I believe she will be known as Keeva’s Simply Spectacular, Spec for short, which I think is well-suited for our beautiful girl with the black freckle on her nose.

In other big news, one of my favorites has also been placed in a new home. Argus has a new family! My mother and I had been really worried about finding him the perfect home, but it seems that Argus, with that classic Border Collie drive, found his new home on his own. From the reports of those who witnessed the meeting of puppy and future owner, Argus was apparently smitten from the beginning following his new mommy around happily. Sometimes you pick the puppy, and sometime the puppy picks you! His watchful nature will make him a great obedience dog.

So that means we have just TWO puppies left! If you’re interested, please let us know right away. Here’s a recap of who is remaining.

First, we have the light brown female Eve. In a way, its been nice having a smaller litter as we get to spend more time with them individually and give them loads of attention. She’s not only gorgeous with her caramel colored coat, she’s also have an amazing personality. All the girls, in one way or another have taken after their mother. So if you’ve met Keeva, you know kind of what to expect. Eve is a sweet playful thing but she’s also got a fire in her. She’s confident, powerful, and she knows it! She has incredible speed and is fond of leading the pack in running circles around the living room. Eve is a great puppy and I know will make someone an excellent companion and competitive dog.

Finally, we have our black and white tri-color male Zulu. I loved Zulu from the moment he was born! Like Eve, he was a mixture of sweet and spunky and could sometimes be our biggest troublemaker as he fought to climb up the litter hierarchy. Being the smallest male, he was often picked on by the others but in the end, it hasn’t negatively affected him. He loves wrestling with his younger brother who has a few pounds on him. Even when he gets pinned, he gets right back up. He’s a very determined dog! I have noticed that, perhaps because he often is overwhelmed by the size of his siblings, he is the most willing to leave playtime with the pack and play a game of tug with the human members of his family. Our one-time troublemaker is now the first to grab a toy and sit next to me while he chews on it. He loves to be affectionate and will likely become very devoted to his future owner. I will be heartbroken to see my little “Zulu Coconut” leave us but our success so far with placement makes me sure that the perfect parent for Zulu is out there.

Orpheus (now Kaeden) is doing well in our home where he runs and enjoys lots of his favorite tummy-rubs. We are still deciding on the perfect name for Muse though that has not stopped her from settling perfectly into our family. Personally, I am pleased to see how quickly she’s learned new tricks and desired behaviors.

Again, if you are looking for a new addition to your family and are interested in Eve or Zulu, please let us know so we can arrange for you to meet them. Like their siblings, they need great new homes!

The All-Important Update Tuesday, Mar 24 2009

Dear Future BC Mommies and Daddies!

This is an update from Barbara’s daughter, known to the puppies as Aunt Shanna.

I am happy to announce that we have found homes for four of the seven puppies in Keeva’s litter. Sweet Orpheus and Firecracker Muse have found a place in our hearts and will be making their home with my mother. Big Teddy Bear Bacchus (now known as Keeva’s Gus) went to his new home this past weekend and we know he will be winning many agility competitions in the years to come. Spunky Isis will also be leaving us in a week and we are thrilled to know she is going to a great home.

So that leaves us with just three left. Some of you have had the opportunity to visit and play with the puppies, while others haven’t. I’ve refrained from talking about their personalities before now since they seemed to change by the day, but it seems they’ve settled down recently so I thought I’d talk abouttthe little ones to help everyone make their final decisions.

Zulu – Black and White male (with tri-color cheeks) – This guy started off as one our smallest but with attention has grown quite a bit and has a large personality to match. This is a high-energy dog who loves to play and has become a recent favorite with the neighborhood children.

Eve – Light Brown female – Sweet little Eve is very much like her mother and sisters. She’s brave, independent, tough, lovable, and cuddly. Of all the puppies, she was the first to want to explore the house and all of its different rooms. But she always comes back and jumps in your lap for kisses.

Argus – Dark Brown male (tri-color cheeks) – This gorgeous boy has a special place in our hearts and were my circumstances different, I’d keep him for myself. He is remarkably calm compared to his litter mates who show the trademark border collie spaz-like energy. While some use the word “quiet” as a nice way of describing a shy or cowardly dog, Argus is neither of these things. He loves to play, explore, and wrestle with his siblings, but in general he enjoys life as his own easy going pace. He is incredibly observant and very intelligent. He quickly realized that puppies who sat politely, got picked up out of the pen first. He is friendly and loves to have his belly rubbed. He will make a wonderful dog for a first time Border Collie owner.

While raising our puppies, our primary goal was to give them everything they’d need to thrive in whatever type of household they were adopted into. Our own home is often loud and full of movement. We have three border collies of our own and a parrot, not to mention any number of doggy friends who visit on weekends. We also have a cd of scary noises that we play for the puppies. This tolerance for sound will hopefully help them stay relaxed in new environments, especially around the noise of flyball and agility competitions.

We also focused on socializing them. Friends, neighbors, and acquaintances are often over at the house playing with the puppies. We wanted them to be used to different faces, different personalities, and different ages of people. It seems to be working as the litter is often complimented on their confidence and friendliness towards strangers. We also make sure they get loads of one-on-one time with various members of our family.

The puppies are also used to traveling. They’ve gone on some long drives to herding trials and trips to see family friends. They also accompany my mother on errands around town.

Not only are they comfortable traveling in crates, we’re also kennel training at the moment. They take their nap in crates, either in pairs or solo. They’re also transitioning to being crated for the entire night. I’m proud to say that they’re handling it better than some grown dogs I know.

When they aren’t sleeping, they enjoy playing in their background pen. We’ve provided them with some basic agility equipment like a table and tunnel. Their favorite is by far the tunnel and they enjoy racing through it at high-speed.

We are keeping them up to date on their vaccines and making sure their health is in tip-top condition. They were recently microchipped. They handled it all bravely with lots of kisses to go around.

Their mother Keeva, just seven week after becoming a first-time mommy, went to a herding trial and got High in Trial on ducks with a score of 96, earning her HIA ducks title. We have no doubt that her babies have inherited her enthusiasm and drive and hope that future mommies and daddies will enjoy playing with them for many years to come.

If you have any questions, just contact my mother or leave a comment here. If you want to view pictures of our remaining puppies, just click their names (Argus, Zulu, and Eve) as you see them on the left and that will bring up their entire photo history.
